Course Description
This workshop consists of theory and a practical component. The course includes the anatomical location of veins commonly used in IV access; common sites used; physiological significance of IV infusion and electrolytes; and recognizing complications of IV infusions.
Objectives
At the end of the course, the participant will be able to:
- Locate the veins used in IV access and venipuncture
- Understand the physiological implications of IV therapy and electrolytes balance.
- Assess and describe the different clinical manifestations of IV infiltration,infection and other complications of IV infusion and be able to take appropriate course of action
- Practice initiating IV access using angiocaths and a winged infusion set guided by the facilitator
- Discontinue IV infusion
Please Note:
Students will not be certified to initiate IVs. Individual certification is the role of the employer. You will also be exposed to latex during class.
Professional Practice Considerations:
Nurses have a professional responsibility to provide quality care and maintenance of peripheral IV therapy in their clinical setting. Evidence based theoretical and practical knowledge enable safe practice while maintaining practical competency and practice in accordance with facility policy and procedure ensures adherence to College of Nurses of Ontario’s (CNO) Standards of Care (under the Regulated Health Professions Act, 1991, Scope of Practice, Controlled Acts Model ). The nurse provides the patient receiving IV therapy/venipuncture with the necessary education to recognize signs and symptoms and potential complications related to treatment; ongoing documentation of the initiation, care, maintenance and discontinuation of IV therapy/venipuncture is also a required component of treatment as per CNO Professional Practice Standards Documentation, revised 2008.
